In the summer of 2022, I went to Bosnia to see the Bosnian Pyramids. And what an experience!
I traveled with the two most beautiful women Rie & Julie from PortalJourneys and 7 amazing strangers. It was an unforgettable week, where we all mingled in helpfulness, care and humour.
On the trip, I met a really special person – Mirzet, who had some exciting ideas and plans for the children and young people in the city of Visoko and the nearby area – in fact the whole country. He would gather them around skating and train them.
Here is his story:
Hi, my name is Mirzet Salkanović. With some friends I started Zenit Skateboard Club, a non-governmental and non-profit organization in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the aim to help youngsters in our country.People in Bosnia and Herzegovina are still badly scarred by the Balkan war of the 1990s. Children and young people experience at first hand the result of the separation created by that conflict and still existing today.
We firmly believe that anything that can bring young people together can make a difference, limit the damage, prevent separation, and give the opportunities that our generation did not have.
We organize skateboard workshops all over the country to promote skateboarding as an alternative to all the bad stuff our kids are surrounded of.
Our workshops are attended by children and teens from all ethnic and religious groups in the country. We bring them together to recreate the unity of the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina that is being lost after the war.
Zenit Skateboard Club already has all the bases in place to grow and spread its activities, but we still need financial support.
We need materials to build skateboarding ramps and obstacles, we need tools and special equipment.
Main thing, we need a van to transport the obstacles and ramps to the locations where we hold our workshops.
We deeply thank you for any amount you can donate to make the youth of Bosnia and Herzegovina happier and with a goal to achieve.
At the same time as building ramps and obstacles during the first year, Mirzet has got all official permits to arrange workshops throughout the country. He has set up the association, so all the documentation is in place. You can see the Zenit Skateboard Club website here >>
